-Why the VIN is Important When Getting an Auto Insurance Quote-
The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) may seem like just a bunch of random letters and numbers, but that VIN actually holds a lot of information about the specific vehicle it belongs to. We as humans have distinctive fingerprints that are unique to each and every one of us, so the VIN can be thought of as a vehicle’s unique fingerprint. Not only is the VIN unique for each vehicle, but each character in the VIN creates a code that details the history of the vehicle.
- Characters 1-3 identify the manufacturer of that vehicle
- Characters 4-8 depict the vehicle model, body style, engine type and more
- Character 9 is a code completed by the manufacturer to confirm the accuracy of the VIN number
- Character 10 indicates the model year of the vehicle
- Character 11 reveals the assembly plant for the vehicle
- Characters 12-17 is the car’s serial number (for high-volume manufacturers)
As you can see, the vehicle’s VIN is an extremely important detail that not only consumers shopping for a new car should pay attention to (accident history, title status, etc.), but the Insurance Companies must pay attention to as well. Those of us that work in the Insurance Industry have heard insureds ask the question all the time ‘Why do you need a VIN to run a quote, I don’t know if I’m actually buying that vehicle or not?’. To put it simply, in order for us to give our insureds the most accurate quote we must have a VIN to input into our system. Once the VIN is inputted into our system, that vehicle’s data is analyzed and based on that specific data, our system will generate a premium. So, it is not as simple as just knowing the year, make and model of the vehicle you want an Insurance Quote for, you must also know the VIN.
